Hispanic Doctors: Missing from Medicine

Hispanic healthcare in America faces a growing crisis, and in Houston, this is particularly evident due to a shortage of Latino doctors. In this documentary, we explore the healthcare challenges Hispanic communities encounter, especially the lack of representation in the medical field. With only 6% of U.S. doctors being Hispanic, many patients struggle to find culturally competent care.

We honor our past Presidents!

Our partners

The Hispanic American Medical Association of Houston (HAMAH) is officially changing its name to the Latin American Medical Association of Houston (LAMAH). This change reflects our commitment to embracing the diversity within our community and being more inclusive of all Latino backgrounds. We believe that "Latino" better captures the wide range of cultural identities, languages, and experiences that make up our vibrant community of healthcare professionals and trainees. Our mission remains the same: To provide support, mentorship, and advocacy for Latino healthcare workers while improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve. This name change represents growth, unity, and a continued focus on empowering the next generation of Latino leaders in medicine.

“I’m honored to have been selected as a recipient of this scholarship and I’m incredibly grateful to the HAMAH and all of its members for their support. I appreciate the continued efforts by this organization to support Hispanic medical students like myself. I hope to return to Houston in continuing the HAMAH tradition of supporting the next Generations of Hispanic positions.”

“The financial aid I have received during my medical education, including the HAMAH scholarship, has allowed me to focus on school and community outreach. Any scholarship received, no matter the amount, decreases the financial burden on students. Furthermore, it encourages the scholarship recipients to give back to the community. I appreciate the support I have received from HAMAH, and the donors that make that scholarship possible.”

Efrain Rodriguez

MS4, McGovern Medical School

“One of the challenges as a medical student is budgeting cost of living while also paying for tuition and other medical school expenses, including board examinations. The HAMAH scholarship is going to help me cover a good portion of the cost of my board examinations, relieving some of the financial stress and allowing me to focus more on academic leadership and community service. I’m grateful to HAMAH for supporting the advancement of Hispanic students in the medicine.”
